Back to School Check List!

Prepare your children’s mind and body for school!

That time of the year is back, when kids go back to school, which can be both exciting and fun but also comes with many anxious moments. My girls are starting a new school this year, so their emotions and nerves are running a little extra high. I’ve been trying to come up with new calming and relaxing activities for them to do at home to ease back into school.

Your child’s education should come first, so you will need to prepare them for what they will face in the new year! As a mother myself, I have been through this many times, so here’s my checklist to help prepare the little ones back to school!

Stock up on new stationery

This is one of the big things that kids will face. They need to have all their stationery ready, so they can focus on their lessons. Every year, I buy my two girls a set of everything they will need, including folders, notebooks, pens, glue, pencils and so on. Every mother will know that stationery often goes missing, so it’s best to get a backup of a few pencils, rubbers, highlighters or any items they use daily!

Having a few special, sparkly things or a fun pencil case if allowed, always helps keep them excited instead of nervous.

Children grow up so fast, especially during the teen years and so you should always make sure they’ve got a fresh pair of shoes that fit. It doesn’t matter if it’s winter and they need warm boots or if it’s summer and they need closed shoes. Make sure that your children won’t go back to school with the wrong shoes on their feet, as this can lead to significant problems with their feet! My girls are quite active so we opt for the black leather runners that they wear all the time, as well as for sport. I find these are harder to scuff and last longer. I’ve also learnt the hard way, not to go cheap and we stick with a good brand name!

Prepare your children’s mind for school!

Improving your kid’s mental state and getting them prepared for the upcoming year work is something you need to do. As soon as school starts, your kids will get overcrowded with information, and they might not be ready, which can cause stress and problems.

Cognitive development activities help to build their memory strength and develop problem-solving capabilities, which is important to help their little minds focus again. When you keep up cognitive development activities up throughout their holidays, they will find learning and absorbing information much easier when they return to school! Some of our favourite games to develop these learnings include our memory games kit, which develops the girls’ short term memory skills. My girls’ other favourite game is tic tac toe, where they have to figure out the best possible move and start thinking strategically. They will need to glue the ladybirds and bees onto the wood chips before they start playing, so they will also be using their fine motor skills in the process too!

It is also necessary to develop their fine motor skills before they go back to school. This will help them write better and use their hands for painting or creativity more effectively! They can do activities like string art, drawing and colouring and creating different pastel bag tags, which are not only fun but also help them improve their coordination.

Prepare your kid's body for school!

Physicality is another crucial part that your child needs to get ready for school, as it will help them get around the school more efficiently. My two girls are always active once they go back to school because, during the holidays we like to do lots of walks, beach days and other outdoor activities that require movement and incidental exercise.

So, I recommend you get your child involved in activities like swimming, biking and playing sports outdoors to help them improve their motor skills and stamina. So when the time comes to go back to school and play team sports, your kids will feel ready for whatever school can throw at them.

Daisy and Poppy are getting prepared to start a new school, so it’s a change to routine after a BIG long 2 month break (as in QLD school had been pushed back by 2 weeks), make new friends, meet new teachers and get to know a whole new school layout, but I am confident they will do wonderfully.

I hope you can use these tips to get your kids ready for school, too!

All these recommendations are things that have worked for me in the past, but let me know if there’s any other tips or tricks on your Back to School Check list we should add to ours!
