Teaching Children About Sustainability

Learning to value nature from an early age!

Practicing sustainability is especially important in the world we live in right now. I’m so proud to create children’s DIY kits that are great for the planet as well as great for young minds. I believe if we all take small steps to help protect our world, we can achieve great things together.

As a parent, it can be challenging to teach children about sustainability especially when this was never an issue when we were growing up! Nonetheless, we need to remember that our kids are the future, and it will be their responsibility to take up the mantle of ensuring sustainability in the future. To help you navigate the tricky subject of educating children about sustainability, here’s a few of my favourite ways to teach our children to value nature from an early age!

Recycling is one of the most important things you can teach your kids to make them more sustainable. Once you teach them the different types of material and which bins they should use, they will have fun differentiating the materials and throwing them in the trash. One important lesson is to teach children that recycling is helpful to

Another fun activity that can help your kids with recycling is by buying them toys that use recycled materials, like our Paper Making Kit. By using old scraps of paper or recycled paper, your children can create beautiful paper art such as Christmas Cards, birthday cards, bookmarks, gift tags or whatever creative ideas come to mind!. Watch how your children’s creativity can be brought to life with our sustainable, eco-friendly ideas here.

Allowing your kids to spend time in nature will help them develop a deeper connection to our natural environment, and hopefully be more willing to preserve it! Using our Nature Hunt Kit, children can enjoy hours in the fresh air, learning about nature and it’s precious inhabitants as they tick off all the items on their boards. Spending time in nature can also be something as simple as a walk in the park, swim in the ocean, snorkel and learn about our marine eco-system or even explore our native bushland through hiking. You can even make a game out of being in nature by finding toys that allow them to connect with nature at a much deeper level like, our Botanical Bunting kit. This enables your kids to turn the natural foliage they collect into beautiful bunt decorations and remember the beautiful things that nature can create.  It warms my heart to see more children can still create with nature and have fond memories to look back on, as well as reduce the amount of plastic toys sent to landfill.

Children can learn sustainable practices to carry with them for life through the processes of composting! One way to do this is to help them create their own compost container. Home-composting is a fun, hands-on skill to help your children develop sustainable habits that don’t require plastic or electronic devices.

This way they can learn about the products that help to enrich the soil surrounding them, what food scraps or organic waste can be decomposed while also making them more responsible as they maintain their own compost. We love this one from a local Sunshine Coast business Bokashi Ninja.

We admit that teaching children about sustainability may not be the easiest topic to broach as it may sound a little complex for them at a young age. But as long as you make it fun and interesting you can have your child help in taking of the environment at a young age.
